CHRISTMAS AT THE MEGARON GREAT ORCHESTRAS Les Arts Florissants: Christmas Oratorio
The renowned Scottish tenor and conductor Paul Agnew undertakes for the first time the direction of one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most significant sacred works, the Christmas Oratorio— a composition that brings exceptional dramatic depth to the narration of the Nativity and stands as a landmark both for the celebration of Christmas and for the world’s musical heritage.
Having immersed himself in early music from the very beginning of his long career, Agnew now leads the choir and orchestra of Les Arts Florissants, an important and historic early-music ensemble founded in 1979 by the legendary Baroque expert William Christie. The ensemble remains to this day one of the most active period-instrument groups, offering performances considered benchmarks in the field. They are joined by a group of distinguished lyrical singers, all with long and fruitful experience in the captivating world of Baroque vocal music.
